AS/NZS 2425:2015 Bar Chairs in reinforced concrete – Product requirements and test methods.

Published on 29 June 2015, AS/NZS 2425:2015 is a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard prepared by Joint Technical Committee BD-084 - Steel Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials.

  • The objective of this Standard is to specify product performance requirements and test methods for bar chairs and spacers in reinforced concrete.
  • Prior to AS/NZS 2425:2015, there had been no minimum test Standard for the load-carrying performance of bar chairs in reinforced concrete used in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Unsatisfactory manufacture and application of bar chairs and spacers can lead to the misplacement of steel reinforcement, may compromise structural strength and reduce the durability of reinforced concrete.
  • AS/NZS 2425:2015 aims to put in place minimum acceptable product quality and load-carrying limits to avert these pitfalls.
  • The Reid Contruction Systems® range of bar chairs and spacers manufactured in Australia under the Reid™ and Danley™ trademarks satisfy the requirements of AS/NZS 2425:2015 Bar Chairs in reinforced concrete – Product requirements and test methods.

AS 3727.1:2016 Residential Pavements

AS 3727.1:2016 was published on December 13th, 2016 and is a significant divergence from the 1993 edition – it is now normative.

AS 3727.1:2016 Scope:

  • Designs allow for low traffic density commercial vehicles <10t.
  • Residential construction:
  • Patios, Footpaths, Bike paths & cycleways.
  • Driveways & vehicle cross-overs.

Mandatory design requirements of AS 3727.1:2016:

  • Random allowable crack width reduced from 1.5mm to 1mm.
  • Spacing of control joints has been reduced.
  • Spacing of bar chairs reduced from 1000mm to 600mm.
  • Steel reinforcement must not run through control joints.
  • Expansion joints have been added to the Standard.

TR34 (4th Edition) Concrete Industrial Ground Floors – a guide to design and construction

Recognised globally as a leading publication giving guidance on many of the key aspects of concrete industrial ground floors, TR34 (4th Edition) provides updated comprehensive guidance on design and construction.

Diamond™ Dowels are a plate dowel and sleeve system designed for construction joint applications in concrete slabs and pavements. Diamond Dowels are designed as a fast fix system that provides load transfer across the joint and minimises differential deflection between adjacent slab panels. Diamond Dowels provide a low in-place cost solution by eliminating the need for the drilling or processing of formwork that is required with traditional round and square dowel systems. Danley™ Diamond Dowels comply with TR34 (4th Edition) providing load capacity at 20mm joint width.

ACI360R-10 Guide to Design of Slabs-on-Ground

ACI360R-10 presents information on the design of slabs-on-ground, primarily industrial floors. It addresses the planning, design, and detailing of slabs. Background information on design theories is followed by discussion of the types of slabs, soil-support systems, loadings, and jointing.

Design methods are given for unreinforced concrete, reinforced concrete, shrinkage-compensating concrete, post-tensioned concrete, fibre-reinforced concrete slabs-on-ground, and slabs-on-ground in refrigerated buildings, followed by information on shrinkage and curling. Advantages and disadvantages of these slab design methods are provided, including the ability of some slab designs to minimize cracking and curling more than others.

ACI360R-10 (Chapter 6.2 - Load Transfer Mechanisms) states that “joint and crack stability measurements below 0.25 mm for joints or cracks subjected to lift truck traffic with small hard wheels will have good service life”.

The patented PD3™ design features a tapered and sleeveless plate dowel that provides the world’s best performance in limiting joint deflection to provide superior joint stability. The PD3 Dowel Cradle provides the highest deflection control tolerance in line with ACI Standards recommendations to limit joint spalling, facilitate load transfer and provide the lowest risk of restraint to ensure the best serviceability outcome for the slab design.
